Climate change

We are working with the sector to share practical, local approaches to using the planning system for climate change mitigation and adaptation. This section includes learning notes, case studies and the original practice guidance published to support Plannning Policy Statement 1.

The Communities and Local Government (CLG) consultation on a revised supplement to PPS1: 'Planning for a Low Carbon Future in a Changing Climate' closed on 1 June 2010.

    We host two sections of CLG’s guidance on the 2007 PPS 1 supplement covering implementing local policies and procedures and preparing and determining planning applications.

    This case study looks at how Dover District Council developed a core strategy for sustainable development.

  • Woking: energy assessments Last updated 29 July 2010

    What happens once PPS1 policy is in place? How can planners make informed decisions, and what information do developers need to understand the impacts of their development and submit with their applications? Woking have tackled this issue and developed a useful energy assessment tool.

  • Broads authority: sustainability guide Last updated 29 July 2010

    Rural areas must also play a role in carbon reduction, especially where they can already see the impacts of climate change. The Broads Authority has published a sustainability guide suitable for the scale of applications in their area, which can be used by non-expert clients when commissioning development and by their architects when designing the scheme.
