Allerdale: a development management response to the floods
The town of Cockermouth, within the borough of Allerdale was devastated by flood waters in November 2009. The council has played a vital role in responding to the floods and has made good use of its development management approach to planning to bring members of the community and partner organisations together to deliver the services necessary to getting the town back on its feet.
The video below, filmed in July 2010, includes interviews with the former head of planning and now Strategic Manager for Business at Allerdale Borough Council, Jill Elliott, Cllr Margaret Jackson (who was then portfolio holder for planning and housing), as well as local architects and members of the local civic trust.
